This is a management system I have used for years and I have seen teachers use it successfully with students from Year 0 - 8.

Students move their own name labels from Drafting to Proof Reading, Conferencing and finally to Publishing.

The teacher is able to see very easily who is at each stage of the chart.

This does work well but some students take longer than others to 'get' how to organise themselves. Assign a buddy!

Along side the above management system I run my choices board forDrafting, Conferencing and Publishing.

Students can choose how they Draft, what they would like to do while waiting to conference and finally how they would like to publish after discussion with me.



These are some of the choices for drafting, I place a number beside them to show students how many people can be drafting in that style.

I always have some type of self management tracking sheet for the students. This is where they identify each week what choices they have made. This helps me in several ways

  • I can identify the student's learning style

  • I can see how they like to learn

  • I can plan further activities around the likes and dislikes



While I am conferencing with students I do not like to have other students waiting for me in a line or nearby. I like them to be busy and engaged in some other learning activity. That is why I am a great fan of Learning Centres. Again I cater for all learning styles and interests, that is why you will see science, technology, art, music, reading and writing activities as part of the Conferencing choices. In this way I can never have a student say to me that they have nothing to do and there will always be something they can do that interests them.

I like to have lots of choices for students to publish. When they conference with me we will talk about the best way to publish their work.

And again I will have a management tracking and assessment sheet for students.

How do I monitor what the students are doing?

Without a laptop...

An anecdotal book. (an exercise book with two pages side by side for each student)

Make notes on how the students are progressing, their choices for learning and any other anecdotal evidence.

With a laptop...

Use a Google Spreadsheet in the same way
